AI has read every accounting textbook ever published. Overnight, everyone got access to knowledge we spent years learning.
But for us, it was never about memorizing that knowledge. It was about learning how to use it. AI took the knowledge. It can't take the judgment.
AI doesn't know your clients, their business, or the things that keep them up at night. It can't sign its name to the numbers. At the end of the day, somebody has to be accountable, and it's not the machine.
What businesses need is our judgment. And now that includes the judgment of how to use AI itself: not just to get accurate financial information faster, but to use that information to make the business better. That's what it was always about.
This is a story about accountants doing more, not less. The routine work gets easier. Your time comes back. And your skills can reach the parts of the business there was never enough time to reach.
The experiment
When I was a kid, I worked in my dad's machine shop. I got paid by the part, and I learned early that the right tools let you work faster without cutting corners.
Now I'm back in that same shop, putting my experience as an accountant to work. Not just to make the accounting more efficient, but to use AI to capture the best practices living in people's heads, connect them to the numbers, and help the business grow: to see itself, shape what's coming, and become a business my dad loves running.

My work was never about efficiency for its own sake. It was about giving businesses meaningful information they could actually use.
I'm an accountant too, and I've had a front row seat to how technology is changing this profession. I've trained hundreds of accountants to work more efficiently. I've served thousands of nonprofits, helping them be better stewards of their funds by leveraging technology. But good stewardship was never meant to replace the accountants serving them. It was meant to make them more valuable.
Then AI arrived, and I've gotten the phone calls from friends whose clients replaced them. I've also watched those same businesses come back, because what they needed after all was judgment. That's why I do this work: helping accountants use these tools so decades of hard-won discernment become more valuable, not less.
